AI Agents SF #8: MCP Ecosystem
This is a special AI By the Bay meetup, leading to the conference of the best Bay Area AI meetups. Rigorous AI engineering with MCP toolchains is presented in more detail there — reserve your seat today!
Our 8th AI Agent Meetup is sponsored by Neo4j and the AI Alliance.
The SF AI Agent Meetup is a new & growing community for AI Agent Developers, Engineers, UX, Ops, and Applied Researchers exploring and leading the evolution of AI agents. Whether you're building autonomous systems, experimenting with LLM-powered assistants, or integrating AI agents into real-world applications, this meetup is the place to discover, share insights, and collaborate with your peers. Join us for talks, demos, discussions and networking with like-minded innovators shaping the next generation of AI.

5:45 pm - Talks:
Can your MCP server survive a reboot?
Ben Hindman, reboot.dev
MCP is all the rage, but what does it actually take to build production-ready MCP servers? What happens if your MCP server reboots in the middle of executing a tool call? This talk will highlight the challenges we're all facing, whether you realize it or not, when trying to build sophisticated agents behind an MCP server. We're not talking about tools that add two numbers together, we're talking about tools that can book vacations, and we don't want to find out we have a flight booked but no hotel!Come learn more about how the MCP protocol actually enables building these kind of sophisticated agents, what the current state of the art is, and how how to make your MCP servers production-ready by making them resilient to faults.
Ben Hindman is the creator of Apache Mesos. Co-founder of Mesosphere/D2iQ and now reboot.dev. Early Twitter engineer. Founding member of the Technical Oversight Committee for the CNCF.
Your MCP Server is Bad and You Should Feel Bad
Adam Azzam, Prefect
Too many MCP servers are simply glorified REST wrappers, regurgitating APIs that were designed for SDKs, not agents. This leads to confused agents, wasted tokens, and demonstrably poor performance. If you've ever pointed a generator at an OpenAPI spec and called it a day, this talk is your intervention.
Like any product, great MCP servers are the result of careful design. This talk shares the hard-won lessons from creating FastMCP, the most popular framework for building MCP servers (and yes, for generating them, too). The secret is to stop thinking about endpoints and start thinking about products. We will cover the three pillars of this agent-native design—Discovery, Iteration, and Context—providing an actionable framework for curating the small, powerful products that agents need to reliably get work done.Adam Azzam runs product at Prefect and builds FastMCP.
