Lack of Words Writing Club
Welcome to the Lack of Words Writing Club! Join us in Amsterdam for a fun and creative writing experience. Whether you're new to writing or just looking to meet fellow writers, this event is perfect for you. This event is open to all levels. Each month, participants write a short piece in response to a shared prompt.
Prompt: Crown Shyness
When some trees grow tall, their upper branches grow shy, afraid to touch one another. Sensitive to even the slightest contact, they stop growing when they brush against a neighbor, leaving delicate cracks, borders, openings where sunlight filters down to the forest floor.
Write a poem, essay, letter, or story. True or imagined, inspired by the phenomenon of crown shyness. Some (extra) food for thought: write about borders, taking or leaving space, growth, cracks, shyness, or anything these trees remind you of.
To Participate:
RSVP so we know you’re coming. Send in your your piece (max 1,000 words) by Monday evening November 17th to [email protected].
Event Schedule:
19:00 – Arrival. Snacks and drinks provided.
19:10 – We gather at the table. Printed copies of the texts are handed out (no laptops).
19:15 – Quick introduction.
19:25 – Reading begins.
19:30 – Each participant reads a part or the entirety of their piece.
After each reading, we dive into a guided group discussion:
What does the piece mean to you?
Where are the strongest parts?
Where could it improve?
The writer then shares their process and intentions behind the piece.
