About the Exhibition
Afrikoyo e is the latest body of work by Ousmane Bâ, a Franco-Senegalese artist based in Tokyo. The exhibition is both poetic and political, a visual journey between a dreamed Africa and an ancient Japan.
Through the traditional Japanese painting technique Nihonga, Ousmane elevates the human body into a site of transformation. His figures feel suspended in motion, assimilating and evolving at the same time, set against textured washi paper collages where warm and cool tones intertwine.
The result is work that reflects migration not as loss, but as becoming.
“I liberate the body. The present becomes myth.”
“I create dreamlike spaces in which I liberate racialised bodies from societal prejudice, from physical gravity.”
— Ousmane Bâ
About The Artist:
Ousmane Ba, a talented artist born and raised in France, specifically in Strasbourg, which sits on the border with Germany, has always had a deep passion for the arts. After completing his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at L'Institut Supérieur des Arts Appliqués, he embarked on a journey that would shape his artistic career. Interestingly, Ousmane's path towards becoming an artist wasn't a traditional one. Prior to his artistic pursuits, he delved into the world of startups in Europe, honing his analytical skills and gaining a profound understanding of human psychology and design.
However, it was during this time that Ousmane discovered a profound sense of inspiration from the Japanese arts. Intrigued by their unique techniques and captivating aesthetics, he made the decision to move to Japan in 2017 with the intention of further developing his artistic style. Throughout his time in Japan, Ousmane has had the privilege of showcasing his artwork in reputable Japanese galleries such as FUKAGAWA GARAGE and Trunk Hotel, receiving recognition and appreciation for his captivating pieces.
